Most cosmetic and plastic surgeons are physicians from other specialties who may have only taken a weekend course in cosmetic procedures. They are not Board Certified or Board Eligible in plastic and reconstructive surgery. They are not credentialed or granted surgical privileges to perform cosmetic procedures in most hospitals.

- There are approximately 16,000 medical graduates per year
- There are only 93 plastic and reconstructive surgery residencies granted to medical school graduates each year
