Difference in Education

Surgeons must meet additional requirements to be considered Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The ABPS is one of only 24 boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), and is the only one which certifies the entire spectrum of the specialty of plastic surgery. The difference in education required by Board Certified plastic surgeons include:

  • Graduate from an accredited medical school
  • Complete at least 5 years of additional training as a resident surgeon in an accredited program, including:
    • A minimum of five years residency training in all areas of surgery
    • A minimum of two of the years spent exclusively on plastic surgery
  • Pass both comprehensive written and oral exams
  • Complete continuing medical education annually
  • Complete patient safety education annually
  • Follow a strict Code of Ethics set forth by the ABPS
  • Perform surgery in accredited, state-licensed, or Medicare certified, surgical facilities
  • Currently hold an unrestricted licence to practice medicine

Virtually all of Star Plastic Surgery’s procedures are performed in the area’s leading hospitals or accredited surgical center to assure your safety and comfort. Our doctors have surgical privileges at the area’s finest hospitals and have successfully performed all of the procedures that you may select.

Many physicians who perform cosmetic surgery are, in fact, NOT plastic surgeons. They are family physicians, gynecologists, dermatologists, pediatricians, radiologists, dentists and doctors from other specialties.
